# Swapping your seat after buying: pick another chair yourself

Fancy sitting a bit more towards the middle after all, or together with someone who booked later? You can move your own seat from your account — free, as long as you stay in the same price tier.

        In short

- You swap seats yourself via My account, your ticket and the 'Swap seat' button — no email to the organiser needed.
- Swapping within the same price tier is free: no money moves in either direction.
- A seat in a higher-priced tier is not possible yet; you get a message saying paid upgrades are not available.
- Seats behind a presale or an access code stay locked when swapping too.
- Two visitors cannot claim the same seat: if a spot has just gone, the system says so immediately.

You bought your tickets weeks ago, two neat seats in row F. And then a friend books after all, three rows further back. Or you log in and notice the row in front of you is still completely empty. With [reserved seating](/en/blog/reserved-seating-and-floor-plans) you do not have to email anyone about it: you move your own seat.

# Where to find it

Log in to your account on the organiser's subdomain and go to your tickets. Open the ticket whose seat you want to change. If that ticket has a reserved seat, the **"Swap seat"** button sits underneath your seat details.

That button opens the same floor plan you saw when buying. Taken seats are greyed out, free seats can be clicked, and your own current spot is marked. Pick a free seat and confirm. Your account shows your new row and seat immediately.

# Free, within the same tier

The rule is simple: **swapping within the same price tier costs nothing**. Only an assignment moves — no payment and no refund is involved. You do not have to check out again, and nothing about your order changes.

If you want a seat in a higher-priced tier, the system stops you with this message:

> This seat is in a higher-priced category. Paid upgrades are not available yet — choose a seat in the same category.

That is deliberate: an upgrade means paying the difference, and that payment step does not exist yet. If you really do want to move tiers, a message to the organiser is the route for now.

# What you cannot pick

A few seats look free but stay unclickable. That is correct, and there is always a reason:

- **Presale and VIP seats.** If a block of seats sits behind a release moment or an access code, that gate applies when swapping as well. Without the code you cannot get in — otherwise a swap would be a back door into the presale.
- **Blocked seats.** The organiser can close off individual spots, for instance for technical crew, press or a wheelchair setup.
- **Spots that are not seats.** Gaps in the floor plan and removed seats are not sellable positions.

# Two people, one seat

What if someone else clicks exactly the same seat at exactly the same moment? Then precisely one of you gets it. The swap happens in a single indivisible step, with a lock on the target seat, and the database allows only one active assignment per seat. The other person is told cleanly that the seat is no longer available and can pick another. Double-selling is therefore technically impossible when swapping too.

# And your ticket?

The seat assignment is the source of truth, not the piece of paper. That means:

- Your account shows your new seat straight away.
- A ticket PDF you download after the swap states the new row and seat.
- The inspector sees your current spot when scanning.

One thing to watch: if you added your ticket to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet earlier, fetch that pass again after the swap. That way the right seat shows there as well.

# For organisers

There is nothing to set up for this. As soon as you have linked a floor plan to your event and connected the price tiers to your ticket types, visitors can shuffle within their own tier themselves. That saves you exactly the emails nobody enjoys — "could the two of us move over a couple of seats?" — without changing your revenue: the same tier means the same price.

If you specifically do not want people moving around inside a certain block, put those seats in a presale channel or block them; then they stay out of reach.

   Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions

## Does swapping seats cost anything?

No, as long as you stay in the same price tier it is free. No payment and no refund is involved — only your seat assignment moves.

## Can I swap to a higher-priced tier if I pay the difference?

Not yet. You will get the message: 'This seat is in a higher-priced category. Paid upgrades are not available yet — choose a seat in the same category.' If you do want to move to another tier, contact the organiser.

## Why can I not pick some seats that look free?

They are probably in a presale or behind an access code, or the organiser has blocked them. That gate applies when swapping as well, so without the right code they stay unavailable.

## What if someone else picks that seat at the same moment?

One of you gets it and the other sees a message that the seat is no longer available. Technically a seat can only hold one active assignment, even with simultaneous requests.

## Will my new seat be on my ticket?

Yes. The seat assignment is the source of truth: your account shows the new spot straight away, and a ticket PDF you download afterwards states the new row and seat. If you already added your ticket to Apple or Google Wallet, fetch that pass again so the seat is correct there too.
