 Discount codes

# Give a discount without losing count

A discount code is easy enough to think up — the hard part is that it then starts living a life of its own. So you decide up front what the code does, how often it may be used and between which dates it works. After that you can leave it alone: at checkout the system works out the discount and keeps count of how often the code has already been used.

 [How it works](#how-title) [All features](https://mijnevent.nl/en/features)

- 1Decide what the code does

A fixed amount off the ticket price, or a percentage. There are no other flavours — and you rarely need any.
- 2Put boundaries around it

A maximum number of uses, a start and end date, and a switch to shut the code down at any moment.
- 3Share it and let it run

The visitor types the code in at checkout and sees the discount appear straight away as its own line in the total.

  How it works

## From idea to redeemed in three steps

You create the code in your admin screen; the checkout handles the rest — including keeping track of how often it has come past.

  1

### Create the code

You pick the wording yourself — MEMBERS, EARLYBIRD25, whatever you like, as long as you have not used it before. Then you choose a fixed amount or a percentage, and whether the code applies to all your events or to one specific event only.

   2

### Share it with the people who earned it

MijnEvent does not send the code out for you — you do that yourself, through your newsletter, your socials, or a partner who passes it on to their own following. That way you decide who gets it, and when.

   3

### The visitor enters it at checkout

There is a field for the code in the checkout. If it checks out, the discount appears in the summary right away — before anyone has paid. If it does not, the visitor finds out there and then, rather than later on their bank statement.

   On screen

## Creating a discount code, start to finish

A quick look inside the admin screen: where the code lives and which fields actually matter.

The code, the discount, the maximum number of uses and the window in which it works — all on one screen. What you set## Four settings — a code needs nothing more

Every discount code has the same four dials. Between them they cover just about any campaign you would want to run.

       ### A fixed amount or a percentage

Five euros off every ticket, or twenty percent off the ticket price. With a fixed amount the code never takes off more than is in the basket — a total below zero does not exist.

       ### How often it may be used

Put a ceiling on the number of times the code works: fifty times, or exactly once. Leave the field empty and there is no limit. Every order pushes the counter up by one, and that counter is right there in your overview.

       ### Between which two dates it works

A start date, an end date, or both. Before the start date the code does nothing; after the end date it stops again. Exactly what you want for an early-bird deal that has to expire on its own.

      ### A switch to shut it down

Is a code out there where you cannot pull it back — on a flyer, in a screenshot doing the rounds in a group chat? Switch it off. From that moment it no longer works, while the orders already placed with it simply stand.

   What you use them for

## Four campaigns built from the same four fields

A discount code is rarely a price cut — usually it is a reason to buy now, or a thank-you afterwards.

       ### The early-bird deal

A percentage for anyone booking in the first few weeks. You set the end date to the day the campaign closes and then forget about it — the code switches itself off, even if you are nowhere near a screen that evening.

       ### The members’ discount

One code for your members, a fixed amount per ticket, with a ceiling roughly matching your membership. If it leaks to a bargain site, that ceiling caps the damage.

      ### The tie-up with the shop next door

The bookshop round the corner or the café on the square hands your code to their own customers. The counter later tells you exactly how much that brought in — an easier conversation than “it seemed to go well”.

      ### The peace offering

Someone queued in the rain for an hour, or got the wrong ticket. A code that works exactly once is quicker to arrange than a refund, and it gives the visitor a reason to come back.

   Good to know

## Three things you would rather know now

Small print has no business being small.

## The platform fee does not come down with it

Our fee is a fixed amount per paid ticket — € 0.50 on pay as you go, or € 0.25 on the Organiser plan, VAT included. It is independent of the ticket price, and therefore of your discount code too: give thirty percent off and the fee stays exactly the same. That is a deliberate choice, and we would rather tell you here than on your statement afterwards.

## The discount comes off the ticket price

If you have set service fees per ticket type, those stay outside the discount — the code only works on the ticket price itself. A gift card and a discount code do combine, though: the discount comes off first, then the card’s balance covers whatever is left.

## Between 91% and 99% is not possible

A percentage may be 1 up to and including 90, or exactly 100. The band in between is left out on purpose: at 95% so little of the ticket remains that the fixed fee no longer fits. Choose 100% and the visitor pays nothing for the tickets themselves — any service fees still apply as usual.

   Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions

## Does a discount code apply to all my events or just one?

Either works. Tie the code to an event and it only applies when a ticket for that event is in the basket. Leave that link empty and the code works across your whole organisation — for every event you sell.

## Can a code be used more often than I set?

No. The counter goes up inside the same transaction that records the order, with a lock on the code. Two visitors hitting checkout at the same moment therefore cannot both claim the last available use.

## Can I switch a code off temporarily instead of deleting it?

Yes. Every code has an on/off switch. Off means it stops working from that moment, but it stays in your overview along with how often it was used. Handy if you want to bring it back next season.

## Does a discount code work on a gift card?

No. When someone buys a gift card the code field is deliberately blocked — a gift card is money, not a ticket, and a discount on money is just giving money away. Redeeming that card for tickets later, though, a discount code is perfectly fine.

## What does someone see when they type a wrong code?

One polite message saying the code is not valid, without giving away why: whether it does not exist, has expired, has not started yet, or is used up. That saves people guessing their way in. Your own overview, of course, shows you exactly where things stand.

# Ready to build your first code?

Discount codes are included in every pricing model — you only pay the fixed fee per paid ticket, discount or no discount.
