If yours cannot, nothing changes about your current routine. Anyone who accepts a local gift voucher knows the ritual. The customer shows their voucher, you grab the phone or tablet, scan the QR code, retype the amount, and then ring up the remainder separately on your till. Two systems, two actions — and at the end of the day a till count that is just slightly off, because the voucher amounts never made it into the register. We built something for that, and it is now live in the shop app as a beta feature. # One scan instead of retyping The redemption itself does not change: you scan the customer's voucher or card, choose the amount and confirm. What is new is what happens next. The result screen now shows a **barcode carrying the exact amount**. You scan it with your own till scanner — straight from the phone screen — and the amount lands as a line in your register. The customer pays the remainder as always — card, cash, whatever you offer. # Your till already knows this It may sound like something your register surely does not support, but the opposite is true: this is exactly the mechanism of the **scale label**. A label from the butcher or cheesemonger has carried a barcode with the price embedded for decades, and virtually every till system can read it. Our till barcode uses the same kind of code (an [EAN-13](https://www.gs1.nl/kennisbank/gs1-barcodes-ean-gtin/streepjescodes/ean-13-symbool/) with an internal prefix), carrying your own article number and the amount that was just redeemed. You set it up once, right in the shop app: 1. Create an article in your till, for instance "City voucher". 2. Open your shop profile in the app and switch on **Till barcode**. 3. Your till supplier knows which variable-price code variant your system reads — there are only two, and switching is a single setting. # What disappears (and what does not) To be fair: you still scan the customer's voucher and choose the amount — that is the redemption itself, and it should stay deliberate. What disappears is everything after it: - **Retyping the amount** into your till, with the risk of a typo. - **The second set of books**: every voucher payment now simply appears as a line on the receipt. - **The till count that never matched**: your register counts the voucher turnover by itself. ![The amount screen of the shop app: the customer's balance on screen, enter the amount and redeem](https://regify-mijnevent.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/blog/screenshots/kassabarcode-bedrag.webp) One practical bookkeeping tip: a voucher payment is not a discount but a payment you will receive later from the issuing organisation. Discuss with your accountant how to book the voucher line as a pass-through item — that keeps your turnover figures and VAT return clean. # Beta: one thing to know We deliberately call this a beta feature, for one reason: not every scanner reads a phone screen. Modern scanners (2D imagers, the same ones that read digital coupons and wallet passes) handle it without issue. An older laser scanner works with reflected light and simply cannot read a screen — no amount of aiming helps. Scanner will not cooperate? Then nothing changes at all: you type the amount as you always did, and every other benefit of the digital voucher stays. Want to know in advance whether your till can handle it? Send us the brand of your scanner and till system and we will check with you. # For issuing organisations Running a city or regional voucher yourself and reading along: this feature is automatically available to all your participating shops, with no setup on your side. Each shopkeeper decides whether to switch it on. It is one of the reasons shops join faster: at the till, the voucher barely costs them an extra action any more. With most modern scanners (2D imagers) it does — the same scanners that read digital coupons from a phone. An older laser scanner cannot read a phone screen; in that case you type the amount as you always did. ## Do I need to change anything in my till? Once: create a 'City voucher' article and enter its article number in the shop app settings. Ask your till supplier which variable-price barcode layout your system expects if you are unsure. ## How do I book the voucher in my accounts?
